Mets-adjacent World Series note: ex-Met Freddy Peralta, now with the Rays, starts Monday after going 5-9, 4.99 ERA in 22 starts for New York. Meanwhile, Steve Cohen earned a B on the MMO report card, and Jefferson Rojas doubled and drove in a run in Dominican winter ball.
Mets AFL week three: Boston Baro homered and drove in 4 in a 12-11 loss, and carries a .452 OBP. Ryan Lambert and Brendan Girton remain scoreless, while Bruin Agbayani is hitting .118. Surprise is 10-6. 🔥
David Stearns is entering his fourth offseason with the Mets, yet he has never made a trade that sends out a major leaguer to clearly upgrade the MLB roster. Senga, Vientos, Baty and Alvarez are floated as possible candidates, though nothing is guaranteed. 🔍
Opinion piece: the Mets still haven't maximized the DH spot, and 2027 in-house options include Juan Soto, an injury-hit Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos, whose 2024 power looks like an outlier. Free agents and trades could be the answer. 🎯
Mets have plenty of holes to fill this winter, and even with cash to spend, few free agents look like slam dunks. A thin class, a looming Dec. 1 CBA expiration and a possible lockout could push them toward the trade market. 🔒
Mets should pursue Tarik Skubal, but a Shane Bieber gamble could be the fifth-starter fix. The proposal would push Sean Manaea to the bullpen, though Bieber's injury history makes it a risk. 🎲
Lindor's 2026 was a bumpy one: hamate surgery, then a calf strain that cost him two months, leaving a .225/.309/.423 line over 105 games. Career-high exit velocity and hard-hit rate suggest the bat isn't fading, so a 2027 rebound looks plausible. 📈
Steve Cohen earns a B from Metsmerized: he funded MLB's highest 2026 payroll, but the Mets still missed the playoffs for a second straight year. Bichette, Peralta and Robert largely underperformed, and the owner shares the blame. 💸
Mets' 40-man roster effectively sits at 43, so cuts loom once the World Series ends. Polanco, Megill and Garrett are expected to be added from the 60-day IL, and 22 players look like locks, with Rule 5 protection decisions still ahead. 🧮
Jon Heyman's World Series-eve knock on the Mets for passing on Nick Martinez last winter drew pushback. Martinez went 15-6, 3.10 ERA for the Rays, but he gave up 2 first-inning runs in his Game 1 start. Hindsight is doing heavy lifting. 🔍
Mets prospects stayed busy in the AFL as Surprise beat Salt River 5-3. Peyton Prescott started and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Irving Cota took a hold despite two runs allowed, and Bruin Agbayani went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Freddy Peralta, a pending free agent in the World Series, says the Mets' and Rays' approaches with him were "a little different," and on why it didn't work out in New York: "Sometimes, I ask the same question myself." 🤔 Prospect Boston Baro homered in the Arizona Fall League.
Freddy Peralta says the Mets and Rays didn't push the same fixes, and on why his Mets stint flopped: "Sometimes, I ask the same question myself." Meanwhile, sources reportedly say the industry thinks the Mets job can set a hitting coach's career back. 🤔
Mets added Jefferson Rojas and four other prospects at the 2026 deadline, with Rojas coming from the Cubs in the Clay Holmes deal. He's in the 2027 plans, but a veteran-filled infield (Bichette, Lindor, Semien) could limit his playing time. 🔍
Tom Brennan's Mets prospect ranks 16-20: D'Andre Smith, Trey Snyder, Boston Baro, Gill Hill, Garrett Stratton. Three bats lost time to injury; Hill (control) and Stratton (2.51 ERA, 87 Ks in 65 IP) could reach the Mets in 2027. 📋
Mets backup plans if Tarik Skubal slips away: Michael King (via a possible opt-out) is floated as the dream pivot, and a Clay Holmes reunion as the realistic one. Either way, the rotation needs help. 🎯
The Mets, who fired director of hitting Jeff Albert after one season, may struggle to land their preferred hitting coach. Kevin Long reportedly has the inside track, with the Cubs' John Mallee a fallback, but a roadblock could complicate the hire. 🎯
Mets' 2025 draft class is a high-risk, high-reward bet. First-rounder Mitch Voit surged after late May, hitting .347/.430/.517 at Double-A and eyeing a possible 2027 impact. Nathan Hall posted a 3.57 ERA after UCL surgery; Antonio Jimenez struggled. ⚾
Mets fans can revisit the 1969 World Series: Al Weis led the club with a .455 average, Ron Swoboda hit .400, and Gary Gentry's two-run double in Game 3 sparked a 5-0 win. The Amazins beat Baltimore in five. 🔍
Francisco Alvarez finished 2026 at .233/.311/.399 (99 wRC+, 1.4 fWAR) after a meniscus tear and a brutal post-deadline slump (.777 OPS before, .579 after). Defense lagged again, and the big questions remain open. 🤔
